The Sensex and the Nifty today logged modest losses. Both indices fell amid negative cues from the global share markets. The Sensex closed below the 58,000 mark while the Nifty settled below the 17,250 level. The Sensex declined 200 points, or 0.34 per cent, to finish at 57,991. The Nifty also fell 74 points, or 0.43 per cent, to end at 17,241.
In the broader market at BSE, the Mid-Cap declined 0.87 per cent while the Small-Cap index fell 0.58 percent.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 11 companies gained while 19 companies fell. Axis Bank was the top gainer as it added 2.8 per cent followed by TCS which gained 1.8 per cent. Maruti climbed 0.9 per cent and Wipro added 0.8 per cent.
On the other hand, Asian Paint ended two percent down and Titan declined 1.9 per cent. ITC fell 1.8 percent.
In sectoral indices, two sectors logged gains while 18 logged losses. IT sector surged 0.9 per cent and the Teck index gained 0.7 per cent.
On the other side, Consumer Durables declined 1.4 per cent, and Power and Services, both sectors fell 1.3 per cent each.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was negative as shares of 1,360 companies gained while 2,207 fell. Shares of 162 companies remained unchanged.
